LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The Triton Fencing Team finished their final regular season competition on Sunday February 22, at UC Irvine. In team competition they faced Arizona State, USC, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Both the men and women's teams went undefeated for the day to earn overall conference titles. The men defeated Arizona 17 to 10, USC 23 to 4, UCLA 22 to 5 and finally UCSB 24-3. The women's results were a 15 to 12 victory over Arizona, a 23 to 4 victory over USC, a 22 to 5 victory over UCLA and a 22 to 5 victory over UCSB.
Going into the competition the women's title was in doubt. The Triton's had suffered a defeat to Arizona in November and needed to win in order to force a tiebreaker. The women foilists took seven victories, but the real turn around came in women's sabre. They had lost to ASU 0 to nine previously, but today was almost a complete reversal as the Triton women sabreists won 8-1 giving UCSD the team victory. At the end of the day the UCSD women had won the tie breaker of season bouts won, 248 to 241.
The Triton men took the men's title by completing the season with a 12 and 0 conference record. The men also sweep the squad titles. The season record in men's foil was 12-0, in men's sabre it was also 12 and 0. Men's Epee scored also took the title with a 10-2 season record. The women added 2 more squad titles. Women's foil was undefeated 12-0, women's sabre were 11-1 as they won they won the squad tie breaker. Women epee finished 10-2 earning second place.
UCSD also had three individual season champions. Michael Fong and Pilar Alicea finished with perfect 36-0 records in men's and women's foil. Bryan Kim earned the championship in men's sabre with a 34-2 season. Also earning all conference finishes were Armin Chan (men's foil) Nick McGuinness (men's epee), Kalman Chodakiewitz (men's sabre), Zitin Kachru (women's foil), Amy Bianchini (women's epee) and Anne Schnecker (women's sabre).
On March 7th, UCSD will compete in the NCAA Western Region Championship at Stanford University.
