UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. ? The UC San Diego men's fencing team finds itself in 14th place after the first four rounds of the NCAA National Championships on Thursday at Penn State's Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility.
Sophomore
Benjamin Dorn is currently in seventh place after recording eight victories in men's foil to lead the way for the Tritons. Dorn wrapped up the first day of competition with 52 touches scored, nine behind Ohio State's Collin Sutter, who currently sits in sixth. Fellow foilist
Michael Fong is in 23rd place with 43 touches after recording two victories for UCSD.
Sophomore
Jonathan Ott notched a victory in sabre and currently sits in 24th place with 22 touches.
“Ben had a very good day for us,” head coach
Heidi Runyan said after reflecting on the team's performance. “Michael and Jon are working hard and hope to have better results tomorrow.”
A total of 20 schools scored points on the first day of competition, with host Penn State leading the field with 61 points. Ohio State is currently in second place after finishing the day with 56 points, while Notre Dame tallied 47 points to place third. UCSD finished with 11 points, one in front of Brandeis University and the University of North Carolina.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. local time, with rounds 5-7 for each weapon. The gold medal bout will take place at 2:00 p.m.
