Triton Men Place 14th At NCAA National Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. ? The UC San Diego men's fencing team held onto its position on the second day of the 2009 NCAA National Fencing Championships, finishing in 14th place overall after the final three rounds at Penn State's Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility on Friday.

Penn State remains in first place in the event with 98 total victories, while Ohio State is second with 93, and Notre Dame tallied 84 to place third. UCSD recorded seven victories on Friday for a two-day total of 18, which trails 13th place U.S. Air Force Academy by 10.

Final combined team standings will be announced Sunday following the women's competition.

After leading the Tritons with eight victories in men's foil in the first four rounds on Thursday, sophomore Benjamin Dorn added five victories to his total on Friday to finish ninth overall individually. The Redwood City, Calif. native wrapped up the competition with 85 touches scored, three behind Notre Dame's Enzo Castellani.

Freshman Michael Fong posted three total victories in men's foil and finished 24th with 60 touches scored. Sophomore Jonathan Ott notched a victory in sabre for the second consecutive day and finished in 24th place with 44 touches scored.

The Triton women will begin competition tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. local time with the championships wrapping up on Sunday.
