UNIVERSITY PARK,
PA. ? The UC San Diego fencing
team continued action at the 2008 National Collegiate Fencing Championships on
Saturday, with
Pilar Alicea and
Alicia Trigeiro competing for the women's
squad. Heading into the final day of competition,
the Tritons sit in 17th place overall, just trailing Temple and NYU and ahead
of Brandeis, Brown, and UNC.
UC San Diego entered Saturday's competition with momentum,
after Benjamin Dorn received All-American honors for his performance during
days one and two of the National Championships.
Dorn, a sophomore competing in Nationals for the second time, led UCSD
with 13 overall victories and recorded 85 touches in men's foil, finishing
ninth overall.
Alicea had a strong showing in women's foil, recording eight
victories and 50 touches overall. With
her performance, the junior from San
Francisco is currently 10th overall. Olympian Emily Cross currently leads the
women's foil field with 15 victories. Trigeiro,
a fellow junior from La Mesa,
aided the UCSD cause from the women's saber division with one victory and 32
touches during her first day of action.
Head coach Heidi Runyan's squad completes their four-day
stay at Penn State on Sunday with the women's team in
action. The final day of the National
Collegiate Fencing Championships is scheduled to begin with women's foil rounds
five through seven at 8:30 a.m.
