PASO ROBLES, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's golf team finds itself in sixth place out of eight teams following the first two rounds of the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles on Monday. The Tritons finished the first day of the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 592 after rounds of 297 and 295 on the 6,741-yard, par-72 layout.
Sophomore
Keith Okasaki carded UCSD's low round of the day, shooting a 71 in the second round to finish the day at 1-over par. He is tied for 10th place overall, eight strokes behind individual leader Patrick Bauer of Sonoma State.
Okasaki is three strokes in front of teammate
Ryan Bailey, who posted an even round to open the day and a 76 in round two for a combined score of 4-over par, 148. His score is tied for 17th place individually.
Justin Gabbert continued his strong close to the season, carding rounds of 76 and 73 to wrap up the first day in 23rd place at 5-over par, 149.
Billy Olsen rounded out the scoring for the Tritons, shooting back-to-back 75s to close the day in 24th place at 6-over, 150.
Behind Bauer's standout performance, defending champion Sonoma State is leading the field with a 4-under par, 572 after two rounds. The Seawolves shot rounds of 283 and 289 to take a three-shot advantage over first-round leader Cal State Stanislaus, which shot 293 in round two after an impressive 282 to open the tournament.
Cal State Monterey Bay, which shot a 5-under, 283 second round is in third place with a 579 total, while top-seed Cal State San Bernardino is fourth at 581, followed by Chico State's 583. Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills are tied for seventh with 600 scores.
After shooting a 6-under par, 66 for the low round of the day in the opening round, Bauer carded a 1-under, 71 in the second round to take a two shot lead over Stanislaus' Bryan Kiss into the final day. Kiss wrapped up the day at 5-under par, 139.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
