LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego women's water polo team had four student-athletes named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches 2009 Women's All-American Team for Division II, it was announced on Wednesday. Sydney Gstettenbauer was selected as the D-II ACWPC Player of the Year and earned All-American honors along with teammates Markayla Quane, Stephanie Heinrich and Jessica Tran. UCSD finished its season with a win over Colorado State, capturing the fifth-place game at the Western Water Polo Association championship tournament.
In the WWPA consolation final, Gstettenbauer scored a career-high nine goals, tying the single-season school record of 84 goals by Julie Swail.
Quane was UCSD's primary goalkeeper with 275 saves while Heinrich was third on the team with 39 goals. Tran was second in scoring with 40 goals while adding 13 assists. UCSD will now have four ACWPC All-Americans on its 2010 squad as Quane, Heinrich and Tran will be joined by 2008 All-American Stephanie Bocian who will return from a late season-ending injury during the 2009 year.
