LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's water polo team had seven student-athletes named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic Team, it was announced on Wednesday. The team consists of three levels: Outstanding (3.71 ? 4.00 GPA), Superior (3.41 ? 3.70) and Excellent (3.20 ? 3.40). Monica Hanson earned the highest level of Outstanding, while Bridgette Bugay, Hanalei Crowell, Ebey Sorenson and Jessica Tran earned Superior honors. Kirsten Bates and Sydney Gstettenbauer qualified for Excellent level accolades.
The Tritons finished with an overall record of 12-20 in 2009, placing fifth at the WWPA Championships in Santa Clara. Senior Sydney Gstettenbauer was named the Division II ACWPC Player of the Year after tying the UCSD all-time mark with 84 goals on the season. She was one of four All-Americans for the Tritons in 2009, joining Stephanie Heinrich, Markayla Quane, and Jessica Tran.
Henrich, Quane and Tran will join 2008 All-American Stephanie Bocian (who missed the later part of the 2009 year with an injury) next season.
