UCSD Runners Continue Season with Solid Performance at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's and women's cross country teams performed well at the SDSU Aztec Invitational on Saturday morning in Balboa Park. The Triton women raced their “B” team and finished 7th out of 15 teams in the Open Race while the men had a 9th place showing in the Men's Invitational. The six races on the day constituted the 61st Annual running of the event.

 

Head coach Ted Van Arsdale, who held out his top runners from the event, had six student-athletes compete in the Aztec Women's Open. Senior Nina Miller was the top finished for the Tritons on the day, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:18, finishing in 7th place overall. Freshman Melanie Swan was the next Triton to finish, ending the race in 36th place overall with a time of 20:47.

 

Kristen Buono finished 40th overall in a time of 21:05 while fellow sophomore Amanda Kuehn ended the race in 45th place with her time of 21:14.  Freshman Sofia Lische was the next UCSD runner to finish, crossing the line in a time of 21:33 which was good enough for 55th place. Junior transfer Jenna Kohnke rounded out the UCSD runners with her 80th place finish in a time of 22:41.

 

On the men's side, the Tritons competed in the premier men's race of the day, the Aztec Invitational. UCSD had its 9th place showing with seven runners competing on the day.  Sophomores Jake LeVieux and Daniel Anderson were the top finishers for Coach Van Arsdale on the day, finishing in times of 26:59 and 27:32, respectively. The duo ended the race in 20th and 41st places overall.

 

Sophomore Gabe LaMothe was the next Triton to cross the finish line, ending the race in a time of 27:42 and finishing 45th overall. Freshman Max Mullender was the next UCSD student-athlete to finish, crossing the line in a time of 28:00 for 56th place overall.

 

Sophomores Timur Crone and Benjamin Schuster finished the race in times of 28:24 and 28:28 for finishes of 68th and 70th overall, respectively. Sophomore Kevin Klein was the last UCSD runner to finish, ending the race in a time of 28:42, good enough for 78th place overall.

 

UCSD returns to action next weekend in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Tritons will have their top runners competing in preparation for the UCSD Triton Classic Invitational on October 7 and the CCAA Championships on October 21. Both events will be hosted by the Tritons on the UCSD campus in La Jolla.
