LA JOLLA, Calif. - Amber Simmons turned in a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Chico State over Seattle Pacific, 75-60, in a semifinal game of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball West Regional Championship at RIMAC Arena on the campus of UC San Diego.
No. 2 seed Chico State advances to the regional championship game for the second consecutive season and will take on the winner of the other semifinal game between UC San Diego and Alaska Anchorage on Monday. Of the eight teams that participated in the Elite Eight last season, Chico State (24-4) is the only team still alive to make a return trip.
In a match-up between teams meeting for the third straight time in postseason play, it was the Wildcats getting the upper hand again this time around. Chico State held Seattle Pacific without a field goal for nearly six minutes in the second half to pull away.
After a Jessie Christensen lay-up at 8:58 to make it 53-46 in favor of Chico State, Seattle Pacific (20-9) would not score another field goal until a Jessie Menkens three-pointer with 3:02 to play. Just 12 seconds earlier, Jade Smith-Williams had given the Wildcats their biggest lead of the night at 19 with a pair of free throws that made the score 66-47.
Renee Goldoff poured in 14 points and pulled nine rebounds while Cory Edwards chipped in 10 points to pace the Wildcats. Kelsey Hill led Seattle Pacific with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Menkens finished with 15 points and Jackie Hollands chipped in 10.
Chico State and Seattle Pacific had met in the regional championship game in each of the last two seasons with SPU winning in 2005 and Chico State capturing the regional title in 2006.
The winner of the regional will advance to the Division II Women's Basketball Elite Eight, set for March 21-24 in Kearney, Neb. The West Region champion will face the winner of the East Region.
