BUFFALO, New York ? The UC San Diego men's and women's swimming teams completed the second day of the four day NCAA Division II National Championships on Thursday night in Buffalo, N.Y. The UCSD women's team is in third place with 164 points, trailing No. 2 Truman (263) and the leader Drury with 317 points. The Triton men are in fifth place with 145 points, just 10 points behind fourth place Missouri-Rolla. Susan Bell finished second in the 400 IM and the women's 400 medley relay team finished third. Karla Holman and Jennifer Sims finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 fly. The men's 200 free relay team finished second and the 400 medley relay team finished fourth.
On the men's side, the 200 free relay team of Dan Perdew, Todd Langland, Evan Hsiao and Tim Fuller finished in second-place with a time of 1:22.40. The winner of the event went to North Dakota, with a relay team recording a national record time of 1:20.69. Steven Hardy recorded a 15th place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:09.88. Jesse Marin finished 13th in the 100 fly with a time of 50.87. In the 200 free, J.P. Oliver was UCSD's top finisher in eighth place at 1:42.63, while Tim Fuller finished in 16th at 1:44.87.
On the women's side, Susan Bell raced to a second place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.69. Karla Holman and Jennifer Sims finished fourth (57.03) and fifth (57.15), respectively, in the 100 fly. Aubrey Panis finished in seventh place with a time of 1:54.12 in the 200 free, while Shannon Simonds took 12th in the same event with a time of 1:54.52. In the 400 medley relay, UCSD swam to a third place finish. The team of Bell, Kendall Bohn, Jennifer Sims and Emily Harlan notched a time of 3:51.18.
UCSD's women's 200 free relay team was disqualified for using an incorrect lineup.
The UC San Diego men's and women's swimming teams are back in action tomorrow at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
