Tritons Perform Well at UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersey Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's track & field teams took part in the three-day Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersey Invitational hosted by UCLA over the weekend at Drake Stadium. The Triton men and women performed well against some of the top Division I and Division II competition in the country.

Sophomore Leah Murphy placed first in the women's long jump with her mark of 18'8", finishing a full inch and a half further than second place Whitney Carlson of North Dakota State.

Junior Whitney Johnson took part in the Invitational Triple Jump and finished in sixth place with her jump of 40'10.25", finishing only behind four Pac-10 athletes and one unattached performer.

In the men's long jump, sophomore Scott Tsuda had a fourth place finish, leaping a distance of 21'11.5". Justin Palmer of BYU finished first with his jump of 22'11". Tsuda also had a second place finish in the triple jump with his best mark in the event of 45'7.75"

Freshman Casey Ryan won the men's high jump despite not reaching a season best mark. His leap of 6'6.75" was good enough for the victory, finishing a full two inches better than Ted Rud of North Dakota State.

Sophomore Jillian Sola won the women's discus, throwing a distance of 146'4". In the women's shot put, she finished in 21st place with her toss of 38'6" while teammate Lauren Anderson finished 13th in the same event with her distance of 40'4.75".

Junior Diane Dunn finished sixth in the 1500 meters with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:31.95 while fellow junior Laiah Blue finished third in the Invitational 100 meter hurdles with her time of 14.04 seconds despite battling illness.

Both the UCSD men and women will return to action next weekend, hosting the Triton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 20 & 21 at the Triton Track & Field Stadium. Nearly 1,500 athletes are expected to take part in one of the biggest and most prestigious meets held in southern California.
