Tritons Use Occidental Invitational as Final Tune-Up for Division II Nationals

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Selected student-athletes from the UC San Diego men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday and used the meet as a final tune-up for the NCAA Division II National Championships that will be held May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C. Most of the Tritons who took part in the meet finished in the middle of the pack in their selected events.

As of right now, 11 women and one male UCSD student-athletes have qualified for the national track & field championships. The official list of qualifiers will be released this week by the NCAA.

While most of the Triton student-athletes have solid provisional qualifying times and marks, only two have reached automatic qualifying standards. Juniors Laiah Blue and Whitney Johnson have already punched their tickets for Charlotte. Blue's time of 13.69 in the 100 meter hurdles is the second fastest time in the country this season and .11 seconds below the automatic qualifying time of 13.80. Johnson's mark of 12.59 meters in the triple jump is also the second best mark in the country this season and better than the automatic qualifying distance of 12.50 meters.

On the men's side, only Daniel Anderson has met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in his event. His time of 1:51.60 in the 800 meters is the 13th fastest time in the nation this season and is less than two seconds away from the automatic qualifying time of 1:49.80.
