Student-Athlete Participation Information and Forms
Welcome to the 2015-16 academic year! We look forward to another great year of Triton Athletics. Please read the following information to ensure you are aware of NCAA requirements.
Federal Graduation Rate and
At UC San Diego, our student body graduates from the institution at a rate of 86%! Student-athletes graduate at an even higher rate, 89%!
These figures come from the University's most recent Federal Graduation Rates report (2007-08 Cohort). The Federal Graduation Rate measures the percentage of students and students-athletes who graduate from an institution within the 6-year federal guideline. Only first-time freshmen student-athletes who were on athletic scholarship during their first year of enrollment at the institution are included in the Federal Graduation Rate report.
NCAA Academic Success Rate
Another measure of student-athlete graduation success is the NCAA Division II Academic Success Rate. This annual report is a more comprehensive measure of student-athlete graduation rates at UCSD. It measures the percentage of student-athletes, including transfers, who graduate from our institution within 6-years of their initial full-time collegiate enrollment, regardless of athletics aid. If a student-athlete was on an NCAA athletics team during his/her first year of enrollment at UCSD, they are included in this report. UC San Diego's 2014 Academic Success Rate is 93% - meaning 93% of our student-athletes, freshman and transfers, in the 2007 cohort, graduated within 6 years. You can see the most recently released report here.
NCAA Initial Eligibility Standards
In order to be eligible for practice and competition at a Division II institution, incoming freshmen student-athletes must meet the NCAA’s initial eligibility standards. These standards consist of a combination of a core course pattern, GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Please click here for further information on NCAA initial eligibility requirements.
For questions regarding NCAA reporting or eligibility standards please contact Katie McGann, Associate Athletics Director (858.534.8700 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
Drug Testing Information
The NCAA randomly selects institutions and student-athletes for drug testing throughout the academic year, including the summer. All student-athletes are subject to drug testing before, during or after their competitive seasons. Student-athletes need to be aware of the NCAA Banned Drugs list and should check with the Athletic Trainers for any questions. Click here for the 2015-16 NCAA Banned Drugs list. Student-athletes who test positive are subject to at least a one-year suspension and loss of eligibility.
Many nutritional/dietary supplements contain NCAA banned substances. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore the purity and safety of nutritional/dietary supplements cannot be guaranteed. Impure supplements may lead to a positive drug test. The UC San Diego Athletics Department does not condone the use of nutritional/dietary supplements and the use of such supplements is at the student-athlete’s own risk. Student-athletes should contact Head Athletic Trainer Vanessa Yang (858.822.0895 or email@example.com) for further information.
Further information may also be found through the Center for Drug Free Sport, which sponsors a confidential Resource Exchange Center (REC) for student-athletes and athletics staff with questions about nutritional supplements The REC may be contacted toll free at 877.202.0769 or visit their website here. (When accessing the REC via the Internet, the required password is ncaa2.)
