Heidi Runyan enters her 12th season as head coach of the UC San Diego fencing program in 2015-16.

Runyan's overall goal is to continue to develop strong, competitive and cohesive teams. By utilizing rigorous practice techniques, she prepares her team for competitive success in USFA individual tournaments, IFCSC team meets, NCAA Regionals and the NCAA National Championships.

Runyan's squads have captured 11 consecutive men's and women's IFCSC titles. She has twice been named NCAA West Region Coach of the Year and four of her fencers have earned All-America honors.

UCSD's men and women won IFCSC championships for the 11th straight season in 2014-15. True freshman David Hadler qualified for the NCAA Championships and took 14th in men's foil, the highest placing for a Triton since 2009.

In addition to her extensive coaching experience, Runyan has many years of competitive fencing under her belt. She began fencing in Hollywood under legendary coach and Olympian Ralph Faulkner and was then trained by Hall of Fame fencing Master Delmar Calvert as a collegiate fencer at Cal State L.A.

She returned to fencing in the mid 1990s and spent several years as a ranked USFA senior fencer in both foil and sabre. She trained under Dmitry Guy in sabre and is a three-time Pacific Coast Champion in women's sabre. Continuing to compete in both veteran foil and sabre, Runyan has been a member of four Veteran World Fencing Championship teams.

Runyan has a bachelor's degree in business management. She is married to Triton assistant coach Josh Runyan. The couple have two adult children.
