Heidi Runyan enters her 14th season as head coach of the UC San Diego fencing program in 2017-18.
Runyan's overall goal is to continue to develop strong, competitive and cohesive teams. By utilizing rigorous practice techniques, she prepares her team for competitive success in USFA individual tournaments, IFCSC team meets, NCAA Regionals and the NCAA National Championships.
UCSD captured 12 consecutive men's and women's IFCSC titles through the 2016 season. She has twice been named NCAA West Region Coach of the Year and Triton fencers have produced seven All-America showings at the NCAA Championships.
In addition to her extensive coaching experience, Runyan has many years of competitive fencing under her belt. She began fencing in Hollywood under legendary coach and Olympian Ralph Faulkner and was then trained by Hall of Fame fencing Master Delmar Calvert as a collegiate fencer at Cal State LA.
She returned to fencing in the mid 1990s and spent several years as a ranked USFA senior fencer in both foil and saber. She trained under Dmitry Guy in saber and is a three-time Pacific Coast Champion. Continuing to compete in both veteran foil and saber, Runyan has been a member of four Veteran World Fencing Championship teams.
Runyan has a bachelor's degree in business management. She is married to Triton associate head coach Josh Runyan. The couple has two adult children.
