Head coach Patti Gerckens and assistants Jessica Millsap, Nichole Willis, Allison May and Sara Robinson led UCSD to the school's first national championship while setting a single-season school record for wins (45-13) and posting the team's highest win percentage (.776) since the school moved to DII in 2000. The Tritons earned their first-ever CCAA regular season championship; moreover, UCSD won its first NCAA West Region title and then went 4-0 at the NCAA Finals for the title.
"It was an incredible feeling to know that our coaching staff was being honored as the National Coaching Staff of the Year," said Gerckens. "I was so proud that we could all represent UC San Diego in such a distinguished way in front of so many of our friends and colleagues. It was an experience I will never forget."
The annual Convention is attended by thousands of college, travel and high school softball coaches from all around the country and is a venue intended for learning and networking, as well as professional and personal growth. Gerckens served as a keynote speaker at the event, talking on the subject of Practicing What We Preach: Mental Skills for Coaches and Athletes.
