LA JOLLA, Calif. - Freshman Danielle Dahle recorded her fourth double-double of the season to help lead the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a four-set victory over California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Cal State L.A. Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
Three of the four sets went to extra points with UCSD winning by scores of 28-26, 24-26, 28-26 and 25-23. The Tritons moved to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, while CSULA fell to 3-6 and 1-1.
The Tritons proved resilient as they were coming off a tough, three-set loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at home. Cal State L.A. came in with momentum following a huge upset win at No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. The sweep snapped CSUSB's 44-match streak of home CCAA victories.
"We played well at the end of the games, which was a big step forward for us," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We had some players who really stepped up tonight. All the games were tight and coming out on top really makes us feel good about ourselves."
Dahle and sophomore Sara McCutchan each posted match-highs with 18 kills. Dahle added 10 digs, a service ace and three blocks, while McCutchan hit .483 (18-4-29) with four blocks. Sophomore Lauren Demos hit .667 in the middle with 17 kills and only one error in 24 attacks. She also had three blocks.
Sophomore Amber Hawthorne and freshman Heidi Sierks split the setting duties for UCSD, with Hawthorne totaling 27 assists and Sierks 26. Junior Brittany Lombardi posted a team-high 13 digs and added six kills.
"Brittany was a great surprise for us," said Luyties. "She came in and sparked us offensively and got some huge kills for us."
The Golden Eagles got 12 kills from Marquis Mora and 10 each from Loreal Carter and Kymberly Silveyra. Silveyra completed a double-double with 14 digs and April Reyes led all players with 16 digs.
UCSD hit .256 (67-27-156) as a team compared to CSULA's .153 (52-30-144) clip. The Golden Eagles held sizable advantages in service aces (9-1) and blocks (12-7), but hit under .200 in three of four sets.
The match featured 45 tie scores and 24 lead changes.
Prior to the start of the match, a recognition of former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis was held on the court. A 2009 graduate, Reis was tragically killed in Coronado this past January. Her family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was held in her rememberence. The Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniforms this season in honor of Reis.
UCSD is on the road for its next two matches. The Tritons play at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Sept. 20 and at Humboldt State on Saturday, Sept. 22. Both CCAA matches start at 7 p.m.
