ARCATA, Calif. - A dominating performance full of long point runs led the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a commanding sweep over league opponent Humboldt State Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena in Northern California.

Scores were 25-13, 25-20 and 25-16.

UCSD hit a season-high .395 to improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). HSU struggled on the attack and at the service line, falling to 2-5 on the year and staying winless in league play at 0-5.

Junior outside hitter Lizzy Andrews continued her strong play, recording the first double-double of her career with 12 kills and 10 digs. She was unstoppable on the attack, hitting .522 with no errors in 23 swings. Andrews also chipped in with two service aces and two blocks, totaling a match-best 15.0 points. The 12 kills were a career-high for the Santa Clara native.

In Thursday's 3-1 victory at Cal Poly Pomona, Andrews had seven kills, five digs, two blocks and two assists.

"Lizzy has put together two great back-to-back matches," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "She has been very consistent so far, which really helps our young team."

Sophomore middle blocker Sara McCutchan and freshman outside Danielle Dahle also turned in solid performances tonight, both finishing with eight kills. McCutchan hit .500 (8-1-14) and Dahle hit .333 (8-1-21) while also adding 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Amber Hawthorne tallied 27 assists en route to pacing the potent Triton offense. Freshman libero Katy Woodward also played a major role with five service aces.

"We hit so well and Amber really has to be given a lot of credit in tonight's win," said Luyties.

Alexa Rosendale led the Jacks with 13 kills and 11 digs, both match-highs.

UCSD's 11 aces were also a season-high. Humboldt had eight aces, but made 10 errors from the service line compared to the Tritons' four. UCSD's .395 attack came via 38 kills and only six errors in 81 attempts. The Lumberjacks had 29 kills and 15 errors in 89 attacks for a .157 percentage.

The Tritons came out strong in the opening set, posting a dominating .462 attack with 14 kills and only two errors in 26 swings. On the other side of the net, the Jacks hit just .107 with seven kills and four errors in 28 attacks. With a 6-4 lead, UCSD went on its first of several point runs, scoring four straight times to go up 10-4. HSU got one back, but the Tritons exploded again for five more points, taking a 15-5 advantage. Andrews put down two service aces during the stretch. Two three-point runs gave UCSD a huge 21-8 lead and, despite a four-point spree by Humboldt, the Tritons had no issues closing the set out. Andrews finished it with a kill off an assist from Heidi Sierks.

The second set played much closer as the Tritons' attack dropped to .243 and the Jacks' improved slightly to .158. HSU held a four-point lead at 12-7 after back-to-back kills and a service ace. At 17-13, UCSD started climbing back in it, scoring three straight times on kills by McCutchan and Andrews plus an Hawthorne/McCutchan block. A Triton service error and an ace by the Lumberjacks put HSU back up by three at 19-16, but UC San Diego responded with its most potent run of the night, tallying eight consecutive points. A McCutchan kill got UCSD the ball and Woodward proceeded to serve the next eight plays, dropping in two aces and watching as Andrews put away three kills and assisted on a block. When all was said and done, the Tritons had reached set point at 24-19. HSU managed one more kill before a block by Lauren Demos and Hawthorne put a nail in it, giving UCSD a 2-0 lead in sets.

The score stayed close early in set three before the Tritons started ticking off long point runs once again. With a modest 6-5 lead, a four-point sequence essentially sealed the match for UCSD. Following a McCutchan kill, Woodward again shined at the service line, ripping three straight aces and putting the Tritons up 10-5. A second four-point run, which included another two kills for Andrews, gave UC San Diego a 14-6 lead and yet another four-point string brought the score to 20-9. At match point, the Jacks committed a service error to end the evening.

It was UCSD's third win in a row, its longest streak of the season thus far. Humboldt State has suffered seven straight losses.

The Tritons return home to host a pair of CCAA matches next week - Chico State on Friday, Sept. 28 and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Sept. 29. Both contests start at 7 p.m. On Saturday, 2012 NCAA national runner-up banners will be raised for the UCSD softball and men's swimming teams.
