UCSD Upsets Chico State, Moves Into Tie for First Place in CCAA

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Thirteen blocks and a solid .293 attack helped the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 upset victory over No. 18 Chico State Friday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 21-25, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-16.

The win, UCSD's fourth straight, improved its overall record to 9-4 and its conference mark to 4-1. Chico State, which entered the night in first place and undefeated in the CCAA, fell to 10-2 and 4-1. The Tritons now own a share of first place in the league.

UCSD was relentless at the net, out-blocking CSUC 13-2. Lauren Demos led all players with a career-high nine stuffs and was trailed by Danielle DahleAmber Hawthorne and Sheridan Taylor with four apiece. Sara McCutchan each added three more.

It was the second time this season that the Tritons finished with 13 blocks.

UC San Diego was also solid on the attack, posting 45 kills and 11 errors in 116 attempts. Dahle had a team-high 14 kills and completed her fifth double-double of the year by adding a match-best 15 digs. McCutchan followed with 13 kills as she and Dahle both swung at .440 for the match.

Freshman libero Katy Woodward registered 12 digs while Hawthorne had 11. Sophie Rowe, back in the lineup for the first time since late August, finished with seven kills, three service aces, nine digs and a block.

Four Wildcats had double-digit kill totals, including Alex Shurtz (15), Ellie Larronde (12), Hannah Wilkins (11) and Lindsay Quigley (10), but Chico State hit just .135 for the match with 52 kills and 31 errors in 156 attacks.

UC San Diego had eight aces to Chico's five and made only two errors from the service line compared to the Wildcats' 12.

The win was the 50th for head coach Ricci Luyties' at UCSD. Now in his third season, he owns a 50-19 (.725) record with the Tritons.

UCSD remains at home to take on league opponent Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The Warriors fell in four sets at Cal State San Bernardino Friday.

RIMAC Arena will be adorned with new wall art during Saturday's match as NCAA runner-up banners will be unveiled for the softball and men's swimming and diving teams, which both placed second nationally in 2012.
