CARSON, Calif. - The 25th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team ran its win streak to four matches Saturday night with a 3-0 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Torodome. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match went 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21.
UCSD, which swept Cal State L.A. Friday night, upped its season mark to 15-6 and sits in second place in the CCAA at 10-3. CSUDH, which has now lost two straight, fell to 9-11 and 7-6. It was redemption for the Tritons, who suffered a 3-0 loss against the Toros in La Jolla on Sept. 14.
"It was nice to get a win against a team that beat us badly the first time we played," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "I think it shows how much we've improved."
For the second-straight night, UCSD was dominant on the attack, swinging at .223 (47-20-121) and holding its opponent to a .125 (33-19-112) clip.
UCSD freshman outside hitter Danielle Dahle continued what she's been doing all season long, recording double-doubles, with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs. It was her team-leading 10th double-double of the season and fourth in her last five matches. Dahle hit .324 with four errors in a match-high 27 attack attempts while also dropping in three service aces.
Sophomore middle blocker Sara McCutchan also turned in a strong attack, swinging at .500 for the night with 10 kills and just two errors in 16 attacks. Outside Rachel Gam, who redshirted the 2011 season, had a career-high five blocks as did freshman middle blocker Kameron Cooper. It was Cooper's second five-block performance in as many nights.
Azieanna Smith led the Toros in kills with nine. Whitney Lee had a team-high 10.0 points, finishing with six kills and a match-best seven blocks. Elizabeth Krieger led all players with 12 digs.
UCSD sided-out 62 percent of the time compared to 49 percent for CSUDH.
The lead changed just four times all night, once each in the first and third sets and twice in the second. UCSD hit a match-best .326 (20-5-46) in the final frame.
UCSD has won 10 of its last 12 contests.
"This team has a lot of potential and we are going to keep working to get better," said Luyties.
The Tritons return to work on Friday, Oct. 26 at home against Humboldt State. They then host Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Oct. 27. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
UC San Diego Athletics, in conjunction with the San Diego Food Bank, is taking part in the 2012 Colleges Rock Hunger Campaign for the remainder of the month of October. The initiative provides nourishment for San Diego families in need. Anyone who brings a non-perishable food item to a UCSD intercollegiate sporting event will be admitted free of charge.
