ANAHEIM, Calif. - Kicking off its 2012-13 slate at Disney's Division II West Coast Classic Tipoff, the No. 8-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team faced a postseason-caliber opponent in No. 15-ranked Gannon, which defeated the Tritons, 69-58, at the Anaheim Convention Center on Friday.

"I thought we did play with a lot of energy and effort," said head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "Gannon obviously is very good and were a lot sharper than we were offensively and really put us on our heels a little bit defensively.

"They had a lot of pressure on our guards. We're trying to find a little rhythm offensively. I hope we learned a lot about ourselves tonight."

Senior guard Daisy Feder led all scorers with a game-high 19 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Feder was followed by senior guard Emily Osga, who scored 16 points and contributed six rebounds and two steals.

Gannon had three scorers in double digits, including sophomore forward Nettie Blake, who turned in a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Knights were superior to the Tritons offensively in both quantity and quality.

For the game, UCSD went 16-for-49 (32.7%) from the field and 5-for-21 (23.8%) from the arc. In comparison, Gannon made 22 of 45 field-goal attempts (48.9%) and converted half of its shots from three point range (7 of 14). On defense, the Tritons grabbed 25 total rebounds, 13 fewer than the Lady Knights.

The Tritons entered the second half down by only a field goal. Despite this narrow deficit, the Lady Knights only built upon their lead in the form of an 8-0 scoring run early in the closing half, which lasted 1:23, while UCSD struggled to put points on the board. In addition, Gannon led by as many as 13 when sophomore guard Mollie Sebald nailed the second of two free throws to put the Lady Knights up, 69-56.

Feder's layup in the last second was the final bucket of the game.

UCSD defended the paint well in the opening five minutes of the game, forcing the Lady Knights to turn over the ball six times and miss their first five shots.

The last Triton lead occurred when Osga hit a jumper to make the score, 16-15, with 8:31 to go in the first half.

Though down by as many as seven points, the Tritons battled back and went into halftime down by a field goal at 30-28. UCSD kept the game close in the opening 20 minutes, which included five ties and seven lead changes, on the strength of their 12 free throws while Gannon only made five first-half free throws.

The Tritons return to the Anaheim floor on Saturday to play the No. 13 Antelopes of Grand Canyon at 1:30 p.m. The game will be covered by live stats as well as live video/audio.
