LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's and women's swim teams swept nationally-ranked NCAA Division II foes in dominating fashion at Canyonview Pool on Friday.

The fifth-ranked Triton men (3-2) defeated No. 2 Incarnate Word (0-2), 179-78, and topped eighth-ranked Missouri S&T (5-2), 153.5-102.5, while the third-ranked UCSD women (4-2) beat No. 4 Incarnate Word (0-1) by the final score of 144-106. Missouri S&T got past Incarnate Word, 151-110, in the other men's competition.

UCSD swimmers produced the top marks in 22 of the 28 combined events contested during the lengthy three-hour meet under chilly conditions.

Junior teammates Nicholas Korth and Alex Merrill were the two Tritons on the men's side to touch first in multiple individual events. Korth swept the breaststroke distances in 56.71 and 2:03.22. Merrill was fastest in the 200 free (1:44.47) and the 500 free (4:42.01), just getting his hand to the wall before Incarnate Word's Mark Rubin (4:42.14) in the latter. Merrill also anchored the top foursome in the opening 400 medley relay (3:26.92), with Korth swimming the second leg, and led off the fastest group in the meet-ending 800 freestyle relay (7:01.40).

The Triton women were again led by their two co-captains, senior Beth Dong and junior Anji Shakya. Each turned in the top times in a pair of individual events, while both also were part of the fastest 400 medley relay and 800 free relay foursomes.

Dong, who has now won two events in three consecutive meets to begin the 2013 calendar year, outdistanced the field in the 200 back (2:07.58) and her specialty, the 400 IM (4:31.62). Shakya beat her counterparts in the 200 free (1:55.09) and 500 free (5:04.05). They were joined by Rosa Bebi and Katherine Tse in the 400 medley relay (3:56.22) and Naomi Thomas and Dari Watkins in the 800 free relay (7:47.88).

Bebi, a freshman out of nearby La Mesa and Helix Charter High School, swept the breaststroke events, racing 1:07.71 in the 100 and 2:25.91 in the 200. Bebi was second-fastest after Dong in the 400 IM (4:40.54).

Freshman Paul Li swam 16:06.23 in the 1650 free to take down Rubin, a two-time All-American in the distance events at the 2012 NCAA Division II Championships, by over five and a half seconds. He also touched second in the 400 IM in 4:13.57, just ahead of junior teammate John Chang in third (4:13.77).

Remaining individual winners for the UCSD men were senior co-captain Julius Espiritu (100 back, 53.59), Dane Stassi (200 fly, 1:53.40) and Alex Moshensky (200 back, 1:56.70).

The women got first-place swims from Erika Rodman in the grueling mile (17:29.02), Sandy Hon (100 back, 1:00.84), Thomas (200 fly, 2:08.62) and Jaclyn Amog (100 fly, 58.88). Hon was also second in the 200 (2:09.98) behind Dong.

The Tritons swept the top three spots in five events on the day. Merrill led in freshman Michael Leung (1:45.39) and John Chang (1:46.91) in the 200 free. AJ Zavala (58.94) and Jacob Lammott (1:00.02) followed in Korth in the 100 breast. Moshensky, Luke Mitchell (1:58.70) and Paul Guzman (2:00.41) went 1-2-3 in the 200 back, with Shakya, Rodman (5:09.03) and Watkins (5:14.97) doing the same in the 500. Megan Lee (4:41.26) was behind Dong and Bebi in the 400 IM. UCSD swimmers went 1-2 in six other events.

Stassi and senior Adam Yen joined Korth and Merrill on the first-place 400 medley relay. Leung, Espiritu and Li were in the water after Merrill in the 800 free relay.

In the 200 fly, Stassi trailed Missouri S&T's Andy Schranck, the winner of the 100 fly (51.03), by .79 seconds after 50 yards, but used a blistering next 50 (28.38 to 29.39) to pull away and hit the pads first by over two full seconds.

Incarnate Word senior Tamiris Nascimento, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, swept the women's sprint freestyle events in 24.05 and 52.98 after anchoring the first-place 400 medley relay (3:38.32).

The UCSD men's and women's swimming and diving programs are right back in the water on Saturday, Jan. 12. The men host Missouri S&T again alongside Division I CSU Bakersfield, while the women take on Division I opponents CSU Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount. The first of 28 swimming events is scheduled to take place at 12 p.m. Admission to the Canyonview Aquatic Center is free.

The Tritons welcomed back Jaclyn Amog, Olivia Fountain and Alex Moshensky, all of whom missed the previous weekend ... With Missouri S&T fielding no diving program and Incarnate Word not bringing its divers, the one- and three-meter springboard diving events were not held ... Billed as Korth vs. Parravicini prior to the meet as it was slated to feature two of the top breaststrokers nationally in the NCAA Division II, Incarnate Word senior Thiago Parravicini was not in action ... Senior Katherine Tse and junior Mark Guyler celebrated birthdays on Friday.
