Matt Ustaszewski Named Men's Water Polo Associate Head Coach
Release: Thursday 01/31/2013
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Matt Ustaszewski, an assistant coach with the nationally-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team for the past three seasons, has been promoted to associate head coach of the program. The announcement was made Thursday by head coach Denny Harper.

Ustaszewski joined the Tritons prior to the start of the 2010 season and has helped keep the squad atop the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) and contend on the national stage.

"Matt is well deserving of the new position," said Harper, who completed his 33rd season as UCSD's head coach in 2012. "He brings a strong burst of energy to the group and it's great to be able to acknowledge his hard work."

UCSD won its 15th WWPA title in 2011, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I national championship tournament. In 2012, the Tritons finished the regular season with a conference-leading 16-8 record and made their second straight appearance in the WWPA championship match.

Ustaszewski has helped lead Triton student-athletes to 10 All-American honors.

"Our recent success since he has come on board is no coincidence," said Harper. "I rarely make a decision about the program without his input. His insight, dedication and Triton loyalty over the last few years has been invigorating to me."

A former Triton, Ustaszewski returned in 2010 to his alma mater after a very successful stint at Southwestern College. He served as the Jaguars' head coach from 2006-09, while also instructing exercise science classes. Ustaszewski was named the Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2009.

Prior to taking over the head water polo position, Ustaszewski spent time as the head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Southwestern while also serving as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's water polo teams. He has also been as a substitute teacher for the San Diego Unified School District and coached with the La Jolla Water Polo Club and Heartland Swim Association. Ustaszewski currently coaches with Sunset San Diego.

Ustaszewski captained the fifth-ranked Tritons as a senior. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in history from UCSD in 2004 and a teaching credential in social studies from San Diego State in 2007. Most recently, Ustaszewski was awarded a Master's in physical education from Azusa Pacific.

Ustaszewski is engaged to former UCSD women's soccer player Heather Szafraniec. A two-time first team all-league honoree as well as the 2002 California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year, she served as the Tritons' captain as a senior in 2004.
