EVANSTON, Ill. - The UC San Diego men's and women's fencing teams completed two days of action Sunday at the ultra-competitive Northwestern Duals at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The UCSD women competed in 12 match-ups, including five against squads ranked among the nation's top ten. The Tritons posted team wins over Cleveland State (26-1), Detroit (21-6), Fairleigh Dickinson (14-13), Lawrence (25-2), North Carolina (14-13) and Wayne State (18-9).

Squad highlights for the women included a 6-3 sabre win over second-ranked Notre Dame. Freshman Megan Gesner was victorious in all three of her bouts against the Irish, while classmate Karinne Caisse was 2-1.

UCSD also went up against top-ranked Princeton, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 7 Northwestern and No. 9 Temple.

The men's contingent was in action 10 times over Saturday and Sunday, facing off against four of the top teams in the country. The Tritons racked up victories against Cleveland State (19-8), Detroit (23-4), Lawrence (21-6), North Carolina (14-13), Northwestern (22-5) and Wayne State (18-9).

The Triton men posted a solid 6-3 sabre victory against No. 3 Notre Dame as well as a 5-4 epee win over No. 10 Stanford. Freshman sabreur Travis Tibbitts was undfeated at 3-0 against the Irish, while junior Bryson Abilay won both of his bouts. In epee, freshman Eduard Zilinskiy and sophomore Adam Campbell-Kruger both went 2-1 against their Cardinal opponents.

UCSD also faced No. 1 Ohio State and No. 4 Princeton.

UCSD is next in action at the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California individual championships on Feb. 10 in Claremont.
