MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - The UC San Diego Golf team will host the 63rd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championship Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12, at Mission Viejo Country Club in Orange County.
Joining two UCSD squads in the 16-team field will be Abilene Christian, Belmont Abbey, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Central Oklahoma, Dixie State, Grand Canyon, Sonoma State, Southwest Baptist, St. Edward's, Washburn and Wilmington.
The Wildcats of Abilene Christian are the highest nationally-ranked team competing at this year's event, coming in at No. 5 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches' Poll. Cal State Monterey Bay is ninth, Central Oklahoma is 12th, Belmont Abbey is No. 14, Cal State Stanislaus is 16th and Grand Canyon enters with a No. 22 ranking. UC San Diego, St. Edward's, Sonoma State, Washburn and Dixie State are all receiving votes in the poll.
A total of 88 golfers, five from each school plus eight individuals, will be competing in the three-round tourney.
UCSD's "A" team will consist of Jay Lim, Daniel Yang, Lewis Simon, Clayton Yamaguchi and Jacob Williams. The Tritons' "B" squad will send out David Smith, Fredrik Palmer-Picard, Ryan Rankin, Jeff Roseth and Marc Herrmann.
The 2012 So Cal Intercollegiate was won by Cal State Stanislaus. Grand Canyon placed second and St. Edward's was third. The Tritons finished 10th, moving up three positions in the standings on the final day of play.
Last season's individual title went to Sonoma State's Alex Marry, who shot a 5-over 218 on the par-71 course. Hermann was UCSD's top finisher, tying for 21st with a 19-over 232. Herrmann fired a 2-under 69 in the third and final round, one of only two below-par scores carded during the tournament.
UCSD has hosted the event at Mission Viejo Country Club since 2009.
The opening round gets underway Monday with the first tee times slated for 7 a.m.
