SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UC San Diego's Adam Campbell-Kruger and Luc Ginestet were in action Thursday at the 2013 NCAA Fencing Championships at Freedom Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas. The UCSD duo qualified to compete in men's epee.

The first three rounds were contested Thursday, with 24 of the nation's best epeeists going head-to-head in a round robin format. Each fencer competed in 15 bouts - seven in the opening round and four in each of the second and third rounds.

Ginestet, a junior, won four of his 15 bouts and sits in 22nd place following the first day of competition. In the five-touch tilts, he registered 47 touches scored and had 66 touches received for a -19 indicator. Ginestet was victorious against Penn's Ayyub Ibrahim (5-3), Columbia's Justin Wan (5-4), Brown's Kelly McGuire (5-0) and Adam Watson of St. John's (5-4). 

Campbell-Kruger also went 4-11 overall Thursday. The sophomore is in 23rd place with 44 touches scored and 67 touches received for a -23 indicator. Campbell-Kruger's victories came against Harvard's Mike Raynis (5-3), Wan (5-4), Ginestet (5-1) and Yale's Peter Cohen (5-4).

Peregrine Badger of Harvard leads the epee field, winning 11 of his 15 bouts. He holds a +18 indicator with 66 touches scored and 48 touches received. Columbia's Brian Ro sits in second place (10-5, +21) while Jonathan Yergler of Princeton, the 2012 national champion in epee, is third (10-5, +14).

After the first day of men's epee, foil and sabre events, Penn State leads the team standings (63 points, +121). Princeton is second (51, +28) and Harvard is third (50, +47). Ohio State, last season's national champion, is seventh (42, +36). UCSD, competing only in epee, is 17th (8, -42), ahead of Brandeis (8, -45), Wayne State (6, -53), Air Force (5, -17) and Drew (3, -24).

The fourth and fifth rounds (four bouts each), as well as the semifinals and final, will take place Friday. The top-four finishers after round five will fence in 15-touch semifinal bouts, with the winners squaring off to determine first and second places and the losers being awarded a tie for third place.

Campbell-Kruger and Ginestet are slated to take on James Salem (Air Force), Dylan Nollner (Duke), Yergler, Edward Kelley (Princeton), Marco Canevari (Ohio State), Daniel Tafoya (Ohio State), Garrett McGrath (Notre Dame) and Michael Rossi (Notre Dame) in rounds four and five. 

The fourth round gets underway Friday at 7:30 a.m. (PT) with the medal rounds scheduled for noon. Live scoring is available here. In addition, ESPN3 will stream the event live starting at 11:30 a.m. here.
