SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's rowing team posted solid results Saturday during the opening day of action at the 40th San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
UCSD will have three boats racing in grand final events Sunday.
"I thought the team performed very well today as a whole," said Triton women's head coach Colin Truex. "Overall, it was a good day, but it is going to take a great effort tomorrow to finish on top."
UCSD placed second in its Collegiate DII/III/Club Varsity 8 heat, crossing the finish line in 7:11.78. UC Santa Barbara led wire-to-wire and won by over five seconds with a time of 7:06.07. The Tritons will row in Sunday's grand final for the San Diego Zoo and Safari Cup. The 11:50 a.m. race will also feature Central Oklahoma, reigning national champion Humboldt State, Orange Coast College and UC Irvine.
"Our Varsity Eight will really need to step up tomorrow if they are going to have a chance to win," said Truex.
UCSD's JV 8 boat narrowly missed a spot in the grand final, placing fourth in 7:29.34, just .22 seconds behind UC Irvine in the Varsity race. The petit final will take place Sunday at 8:50 a.m.
"The JV Eight rowed incredibly well, but came up just short," said Truex.
The Triton women won the Collegiate DII/III/Club Varsity 4+ prelim and will have the luxury of owning lane one in Sunday's grand final (11:40 a.m.). UCSD, trailing through the first 500 meters, came from behind to win with a time of 7:43.79, beating second place Central Oklahoma by almost six seconds (7:49.76).
"The four, stroked by freshman Shruti Kamath, has just been getting better every race," said Truex.
The Tritons placed third overall in the prelim of the Collegiate DII/III/Club Novice 8, recording a 7:25.44. UC Santa Barbara won the race in 7:18.86. The grand final will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
"The novices performed well enough to earn lane three in the grand final and will have a shot to win the event tomorrow," said Truex.
In the open division, UCSD's "A" boat placed sixth in its heat (8:44.07), while the "B" boat came in fifth in its heat (8:14.44). Both will run in Sunday's petit final at 7:40 a.m.
In 2012, the Triton Novice 8 crew won the grand final from an outside lane, recording a time of 8:20.45 to beat second place Sonoma State by just under nine seconds. UCSD's Varsity 8 finished fourth in the grand final, which was won by Humboldt State, while the JV 8 boat placed sixth in the petit final.
Sunday's races will be covered by a fee-based live video stream.
