UCSD Captures High Marks at Sun Angel and Mangrum

TEMPE, Ariz. - Entering into the second half of the 2013 season on Saturday, the UC San Diego track and field teams were present at two meets, including the 34th Sun Angel Track Classic and the Mangrum Invitational, and departed from both of their destinations with some good results.

Spending Friday and Saturday at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium, the Tritons tallied a handful of top-tier results among an elite field of competition.

Freshman Kristin Sato came away with third place in the women's long jump, leaping 17'6.75”, at the Arizona State-hosted meet. It was UCSD's highest finish on Saturday in the Grand Canyon state. Sato also jumped 39'3” in the triple jump for a sixth-place showing.

On the track, sophomore Sabrina Pimentel set a personal best of 2:11.71 in the women's 800-meter run, placing ninth overall. Pimentel still has the third-fastest time in UCSD history for that event. In the 400 hurdles, junior Lauren Irish took 10th overall upon crossing the finish line at 1:02.88.

With one of two fourth-place finishes for the UCSD men, senior Zach Nagengast had a mark of 159'8” in the discus throw. Nagengast competed on Friday as well in the hammer throw premiere event, earning eighth place after throwing a length of 183'11”. Just ahead of Nagengast in seventh was senior A.B. Shaheen, who threw 184'11”.

In the javelin throw, sophomore Nash Howe had the Triton men's other fourth-place showing in Arizona. Howe threw the spear a length of 198'8", while redshirt senior Kiley Libuit came in eighth with a throw that traveled 187'8".

Senior Ryan Eckert settled for sixth in the men's shot put after tossing the metal sphere a span of 50'8”.

Most Tritons faced their opposition on Saturday at the Mangrum Invitational, hosted by Cal State San Marcos at Mangrum Track & Soccer Field. In all, UCSD had 16 finishes within the top three at Mangrum, including seven for the women and nine for the men.

Junior Marya Carter and freshman Julia Wildenthaler occupied the top two slots of the women's triple jump with respective marks of 37'4” and 36'9.75”. Wildenthaler hit a personal best with her mark.

Coming away with a pair of second-place showings was junior Eva Isaacs, who threw 42'2.75” in the shot put and matched her personal record of 139'0” in the discus throw.

Freshman Haley Libuit came in second in the javelin throw with a mark of 127'9”.

For the men, freshman Kevin Chiao finished first in the long jump, hitting a personal-record distance of 22'5.75”, the highest mark attained by the UCSD men this season.

Senior Quentin McWhorter launched far into the pit for season-best marks in two events. McWhorter won the men's triple jump with a mark of 46'8” and placed third in the long jump with a top jump measuring 22'2.5”.

Throwing to two second-place finishes was senior Matt Endler, who recorded a throw of 152'9” in the hammer and a throw of 152'3” in the discus. Endler additionally finished fifth in the shot put (44'8.75”).

In the high jump, freshman Sean Cook was the runner-up, clearing a height of 6'4”.

Other second-place results came from sophomore Keith Rose in the 200 (21.78) and freshman Adam Augustyn ( 15.19) in the 110 hurdles.

UCSD will make a return trip to Claremont on Saturday for the 27th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. Pomona College's Strehle Track will be the site of the meet.
