La Face Earns Academic All-District Honors
Release: Friday 05/03/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Nick La Face was named Thursday to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® Baseball First Team for the NCAA Division II District 8, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The catcher/designated hitter, a first-time honoree, now joins 10 other selections from his region at the district level in moving on to the national Capital One Academic All-America® ballot. UCSD’s District 8 includes programs from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference. Seven of the 11 Academic All-District 8 baseball players for Division II hail from the CCAA, with four from league leader Cal State Monterey Bay.

La Face is a North Hollywood native out of Notre Dame High School who is one of three UCSD players to start all 46 games thus far in 2013. The redshirt junior is hitting .247 (37-for-150) with 16 runs, 11 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBI. La Face is second on the team in home runs and tied for third in the conference with his 32 walks. He has started 103 consecutive games since UCSD’s 2012 season opener.

In the classroom, La Face maintains a 3.31 grade-point average in political science. He follows on the heels of all-time UCSD career pitching appearances leader and two-time Academic All-American Elias Tuma, who graduated in 2012.

Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District teams.

The Tritons are currently in Seaside to open a four-game series at No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., with a seventh straight NCAA West Regional bid at stake as the 2013 regular season wraps up on Sunday.
