LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s volleyball program has welcomed two more valuable National Letter-of-Intent signings ahead of the 2014 season, as announced on Friday by Triton head coach Kevin Ring.

Jose Carlos Martinez, a setter and native of Puerto Rico, and Jackson Wopat, a middle blocker from Santa Barbara, join two players who made their commitments in the fall, libero Griffin Galvin out of Folsom and opposite Adam Martell from Wisconsin.

“I am excited for Jose Carlos and Jackson to join our program in the fall,” said Ring. “They are both bright, hard-working student-athletes who will fit in great with the Triton family. They will represent UCSD Men’s Volleyball well on the court and in the classroom.”

Martinez spent his final prep year at Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby, Ohio. Prior to arriving in the United States, he had played two years at the junior varsity level followed by one varsity season at Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His side lost in the Puerto Rico High School Athletic Alliance (PRHSAA) semifinals to conclude his final campaign there, after one championship and one runner-up placement as a JV player.

Martinez was a two-time Power League Volleyball Puerto Rico (PLVPR) All-Star (2012-13) and one-time Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola Invitational Most Valuable Player. He led his team to a Puerto Rico Junior Nationals title in 2012, earning another all-star nod. Martinez also has gold, silver and bronze medals to his credit from the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships (BJNC).

“Jose Carlos is very competitive and I expect him to bring that competitiveness to our gym,” added Ring. “He knows, as a setter, that he needs to be a vocal leader of our offense. He is a very good setter now, and with his work ethic and desire to learn, he will become even better.”

Wopat graduated on June 6 from Goleta’s Dos Pueblos High School, where he was a two-sport standout in volleyball and basketball for the Chargers. A two-time volleyball captain for head coach Chris Hughes, Wopat improved his credentials through each of the past three seasons, being named to the All-Channel League First Team as a senior after second-team selection in 2012 and all-league honorable mention in 2011. He recently earned All-CIF Southern Section Division 2 First Team and Presidio Sports All-City Team recognition, having averaged over 10 kills per match in leading DPHS to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals.

Wopat also captained his Santa Barbara Volleyball Club 18 Blue side this past season. He previously competed for the SB Spikers Volleyball Club 18-1 (2011-12) and the East Beach Volleyball Club 16-1 (2010-11). In July of 2012, Wopat traveled to Dallas, Texas, for the USA Volleyball BJNC with the Santa Monica Beach Club 18-Black. At the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, later that same month, he won a bronze medal in the Boys’ National Division with the USA Boys’ Youth Continental White select squad.

“Jackson has all of the tools to be a great middle blocker in the (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation),” concluded Ring. “As a blocker, he is quick laterally as well as quick off the ground. His block press move is as good as any high school senior out there. Our middle blocker position has just become a whole lot more competitive.”
