No. 11 UCSD Grounded by No. 6 Gauchos, Downed by No. 16 Eagles at NorCal Tournament
Release: Monday 09/21/2013
by UCSD

BERKELEY – No. 11 UC San Diego began play at the NorCal Tournament Saturday, falling in game one to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara 16-7. In the second game of the afternoon, the Tritons were downed by No. 16 Concordia 15-12.

Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) led the Tritons (4-6) on the day, totaling five goals.

The Tritons weren’t able to overcome an early deficit in game one, being held scoreless in the first half.

The Gauchos (6-0) came out on fire offensively to lead 6-0 after the first quarter and 10-0 at the half.

UCSD responded with a strong defensive third period, holding UCSB to one goal. The Tritons managed four goals to head into the final period down 11-4.

The UCSD comeback effort fell short, however, being outscored 5-3 in the fourth to fall to the Gauchos 16-7.

Friedrich led the Tritons with two goals in the loss.

Chase Cockerill, Matt Michalko (San Diego/The Bishop’s School), Joe Dietrich, Connor Watson and Bryan Lee each found the back of the cage for the Tritons to round out the scoring.

Matt Gronow totaled six goals to lead UC Santa Barbara.

In game two, UCSD held Concordia (5-1) to only three second half goals but couldn’t comeback from allowing 12 scores before intermission.

The two teams were aggressive early, exchanging goals throughout the first period. The Tritons managed a 5-4 lead after the high-scoring opening quarter.

The difference in the match proved to be the second period, as Concordia continued the offensive onslaught by scoring eight times. Dragan Dinic, who led CUI with four goals, poured in three for the Eagles in the period. UCSD was held to only two goals, allowing CUI to enter halftime up 12-7.

Coming out of intermission, the Tritons made an adjustment on the defensive end. UCSD limited CUI to a pair of goals in the period, but was only able to push across three on the offensive side to cut the lead to 14-10.

UCSD continued the strong defensive effort in the final period, holding the Eagles to a single score. The comeback fell short, however, as the Tritons only managed two goals from Friedrich and Dietrich to fall 15-12.

David Higginson (San Diego/The Bishop's School) led the Tritons with four goals, while Friedrich found the back of the cage three times. Luca De Vivo tallied two goals and Watson, Michalko and Dietrich each amassed one apiece to round of the scoring.

The Tritons will play two more games at the NorCal Tournament Sunday. UCSD will play the first game at 9:25 a.m. at Diablo Valley College against the loser of the Air Force/Loyola Marymount matchup.
