LA JOLLA, Calif. - It took a grueling five sets to do it, but the 11th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match Saturday night, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest were 21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-9. UCSD is now 15-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while CSUMB dropped to 11-6 on the sesaon and 5-4 in CCAA matches.
Middle blocker Sara McCutchan led UCSD with 18.5 points on 16 kills and five block assists. Outside hitter Danielle Dahle finished with 14 kills and 21 digs, while opposite Caitlin Brenton had seven kills, two aces, 11 digs and a match-high nine blocks.
Middle Kameron Cooper played for eight kills and eight blocks, two of those solos. Setter Heidi Sierks totaled 54 assists, one shy of her career-high, while also adding 11 digs. Libero Brittany Lombardi led all players with 31 digs, a season-high for any Triton.
For the Otters, Jessica Malcolm and Julia Ashen combined for 47 kills, a match-high 25 going to Malcolm. Ashen, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, completed a solid double-double by adding 21 digs. Setter Kelsey Johnston had 52 assists and 26 digs, both team-highs.
Neither squad eclipsed the .200 mark in hitting percentage, with UCSD finishing at .178 (66-28-214) and CSUMB swinging at a .140 (60-30-214) clip.
The match featured 18 tie scores, but just six lead changes.
UCSD plays at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 18 (7 p.m.) before hosting Cal State L.A. on Oct. 19 (7 p.m.). Prior to the match against the Golden Eagles, the eight members of the inaugural UCSD Athletics Hall of Fame class will be introduced.
