CARSON, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team finished its regular season on a down note Saturday, suffering a 71-61 loss against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Torodome.
UCSD (16-10, 13-9 CCAA) will serve as the No. 4 seed in next week's CCAA Tournament at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. The Tritons will face fifth-seeded Cal State L.A. in a first round game on Thursday, March 6, at 5:30 p.m.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (17-9, 13-9) earned the tournament's third seed and will play sixth-seeded Cal State East Bay Thursday at 8 p.m.
Cal Poly Pomona is the tourney's top seed, while Chico State is the No. 2 seed. Both teams have first round byes and will play on Friday, March 7.
UCSD scored the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws by McKennan Bertsch. CSUDH returned the favor with two charity stripe makes by Monay Lee and an ensuing three-pointer by Lee gave the Toros a 5-2 lead and they would not trail again.
Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed its lead to 18 points when Breanne Garcia hit a three with 1:50 left in the opening half to make the score 37-19. The Toros led by 17, 39-22, at halftime.
Simone Thompson made a jumper to open the second half and put CSUDH up by 19, 41-22, its largest lead of the night.
The Toros pulled away again and led by 15, 69-54, with just 1:42 left in the game.
"I am very disappointed in tonight's result and our approach to the game," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "Obviously, you can't spot a really good team an 18-point lead in the first half and expect to win. We got competitive and battled in the second half, but we just didn't have enough to get it done."
Seto led UCSD with 15 points, while Stephanie Yano finished with 11. Bertsch had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
CSUDH had four players with 10 or more points, including Lee (game-high 16), Garcia (14), Tayler Champion (12) and Talia Rayford (12). Rayford completed a double-double by grabbing a game-high 13 boards.
The Tritons hit just three of 16 three-point attempts and shot 35 percent overall in the game. They made 24 of 36 free throws. The Toros shot 40 percent and made nine of 20 treys. They held a 41-33 advantage in rebounds.
UC San Diego went 2-0 against Cal State L.A. during the regular season, winning 78-61 in La Jolla and 68-61 in Los Angeles.
Tournament semifinals will be played Friday, March 7, at 5:30 and 8 p.m., while the championship game is set for Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m.
