PHILADELPHIA - The UC San Diego women's Varsity 8 crew placed fifth in the Grand Final Saturday to wrap up action at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River outside of Philadelphia.
UCSD, tied for fifth in the national rankings, crossed the finish line with a time of 6:54.59 in the Division II Grand Final.
Nova Southeastern, the top-ranked team in the country, won the race and the Henry Backe Trophy by clocking a 6:32.97. Third-ranked Humboldt State was a close second in 6:33.45, while No. 4 Barry placed a distant third in 6:44.53. Un-ranked Mercyhurst was fourth (6:48.46) and No. 8 Philadelphia finished sixth (6:59.37).
The Tritons earned a spot in the Grand Final by virtue of their performances during Friday's races.
They opened the regatta with a third-place finish in their heat, coming in behind Nova Southeastern and Philadelphia. Merrimack and Franklin Pierce finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
UCSD next raced in a repechage, with the top four finishers advancing to the Grand Final. The Tritons took third behind Barry and Mercyhurst, topping Philadelphia, Rollins and Merrimack.
Also on Friday, UC San Diego's Varsity 4 boat placed third in its heat, trailing Virginia Tech and Bowdoin. Only the top two crews from each of the two heats moved on to the final.
UCSD will now wait and see if its Varsity 8 performed well enough this season to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be held May 30-June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. The selections will be announced on May 19 at 2 p.m. (Pacific) with a live show at NCAA.com.
