LA JOLLA, Calif.- The University of California San Diego softball team dropped two games in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play to 21st-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at Triton Softball Field. CSUMB shutout UC San Diego 8-0 in the first game before coming from behind to win game two, 9-5.
The Otters took all four games of the series after sweeping the doubleheader Thursday. The marks the first time UCSD has dropped all four games in a series since the 2015 season against Humboldt State.
With the losses, the Tritons fall to 14-12 on the season and 9-11 in the conference. CSUMB improves to 19-4 overall and 13-3 in CCAA play.
UCSD did not generate much offensively and was shutout 8-0. The Otters’ ace Hayley Fein (11-3) pitched six innings, striking out two and allowed five hits.
The Tritons surrendered four runs in the top of the third. The Otters had three doubles in the inning.
Jayme Stark had an RBI single in the fourth inning to give CSUMB its fifth run.
The Otters scored two more runs in the fifth inning due to a fielding error by the UCSD third baseman and a passed ball.
CSUMB capped its scoring in the seventh inning earning its eighth run when Julia Garcia had an RBI groundout.
Sophomore Lauren Brown and freshman Alanna Phillips split time in the circle for the Tritons. Brown (4-5) was credited with the loss after giving up four earned runs in four innings of play. Phillips came in relief of Brown for three innings and allowed three runs and three hits.
UCSD blew a 5-1 lead as CSUMB scored six in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning to defeat the Tritons, 9-5.
The Otters struck in the top of the first inning when Anneliese Lopez had an RBI single that plated Stark.
UCSD answered in the bottom of the second inning with three runs to take the lead, 3-1. Sophomore Caitlyn Weisner had an RBI double before Ross-Smith singled to score Weisner. Junior Kelsi Maday capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle.
The Tritons scored two more in the fourth inning to take a four-run lead. Maday doubled before Sanders hit a bomb over left field to make it a 5-1 game.
CSUMB answered in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs to retake the lead, 7-5. The Otters had a home run, two triples and a double in the inning.
Garcia hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give CSUMB its final two runs of the game and seal the 9-5 victory.
Sanders finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Ross-Smith went 3-for-3 at the plate and had an RBI. Maday had a double, an RBI and two hits. Garcia had two home runs, four RBI and three hits for the Otters.
Freshman Lizzy Beutter, senior Milana Casillas and Brown split time in the circle for UCSD. Beutter pitched the first four innings, giving up four runs. Casillas (6-3) came in relief of Beutter and was credited with the loss after giving up three runs. Brown pitched the last three innings surrendering two runs.
The Otters’ Alyssa D’Agostino (4-1) earned the win after pitching 2.2 innings. Hayley Fein was credited with a save after allowing no runs in three innings of work.
The Tritons travel to Sonoma State for a four-game CCAA series in Rohnert Park March 26-27. Sunday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. while the action will get underway at 11:00 a.m. on Monday.
