UC San Diego Men and Women Take First at Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Meet
Release: Saturday 03/18/2017

SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams both won the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet at Point Loma Saturday. The men placed first out of eight teams with 199 points while the women took first with 172 points in a field of eight.

The men edged out Navy (190 points) after finishing behind the Midshipmen in last week's San Diego Collegiate Challenge.

"We had some great performances today," said head coach Tony Salerno. "With final exams underway, we were at less than full strength. We are happy to come away with wins on both sides considering we did it without entries in several events."

UCSD combined to win 12 events.

The main highlight for the Tritons was junior Paul Doan's performance in the 100-meter sprint. Doan not only placed first in the event, he set a new UCSD school record with a time of 10.60. His time is also an NCAA provisional mark. The program standard was previously shared by Doan (2016) and Keith Rose (2013) at 10.62.

Other highlights include performances by freshman Claudia Cox and sophomore Natalie Caraway. Cox finished first in the 400 hurdles, improving her NCAA provisional time to 1:01.46. Caraway posted two first-place finishes on the day in the high jump and the triple jump. She hit a 5'5" mark in the high jump and a distance of 38'4.25" in the triple jump.

Senior Jackie Chalmers took first in the 400 meters with a time of 58.11.

On the men's side, individual winners on the track were Doan in the 100 dash (10.60), Jared Senese in the 800 run (1:55.34), Samuel Blake in the 5000 (14:55.15) and Josef Polk in the 400 hurdles (53.79).

The men's 4x100 relay of Andrew Dirks, Adam Winding, Justin Hunter and Doan placed second with a time of 41.41.

In the field events, Luis Carson took first in the high jump (6'5") and Khalil Flemister was first in the triple jump (46'6.75"). Shane Peterson was second in the pole vault (15'5").

The Tritons will compete in the two-day Aztec Invitational March 24-25 hosted by San Diego State.
