UC San Diego Sweeps Doubleheader at No. 13 Chico State

CHICO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team took down 13th-ranked Chico State in both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader Friday at the Wildcat Softball Field. UC San Diego won, 2-1, in the first game and hung on to grab a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

The wins mark the second weekend in a row that UCSD has beaten a ranked team after the Tritons earned two victories against No. 1 Humboldt State in a four-game series last weekend.

With the sweep, UCSD improves to 23-19 on the season and 14-16 in the CCAA. The Wildcats fall to 29-10 overall and 19-9 in the CCAA. The Tritons remain in seventh place in the conference standings while Chico State drops to third third.

"We competed very well today against a tough Chico team," said head coach Patti Gerckens. "Our pitching and defense was strong and we came up with some clutch hits". 

GAME ONE
The duo of sophomore Lauren Brown and senior Milana Casillas combined to only allow six hits, two walks and one run as UCSD took a 2-1 decision over CSUC. Brown threw 4.0 innings, striking out four and giving up one run. Casillas came in relief of Brown and earned her seventh win of the season after pitching 3.0 innings and only allowing two hits.

The Tritons jumped on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the third inning. Junior Kendall Baker scored on a single to left field from junior Kelsi Maday to give UCSD a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at one.

In the sixth inning, freshman Danielle Stedman scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Caitlin Weisner to ultimately seal the victory. Chico State had hits in the sixth in seventh innings but it wasn’t enough as UCSD earned the upset win.

Baker lead the Tritons' with two hits and a run while Weisner and Maday each had an RBI. The Wildcats’ Cailin Garmon had two hits and an RBI.

In the circle, Haley Gilham (17-4) was credited with the loss after giving up both runs and. She pitched a complete game and tallied five strikeouts.

GAME TWO
The Tritons scored three runs in the second inning and held on to grab a 3-2 triumph.

Junior Kendall Woken and freshman Mikaila Reyes had back-to-back RBI singles to score junior Lauren Sanders and Weisner. Woken made it across home plate on a throwing error by the CSUC right fielder to give UCSD a 3-0 advantage.

The Wildcats closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to make it a 3-2 game but it wasn’t enough as the Tritons’ earned their second win of the day. Karli Skowrup had a big home run over left field to score Amanda Flores.

Casillas retired three Wildcat batters in order in the bottom of the seventh.

In the circle, freshman Lizzy Beutter earned her seventh win of the season, pitching 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and two earned runs. Casillas was credited with the save after allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work. The marks her third save of the season.

Weisner, Brittney Ross-Smith, Woken and Reyes each had a hit for UCSD while Maday swiped one base.

For CSUC, Skowrup had two RBI, a homerun and a hit while Ari Marsh tallied two hits. Lynea Klemmedson (2-1) earned the loss after giving up all three runs in 2.0 inning of work.

The Tritons will look to win the series tomorrow in a doubleheader against the Wildcats set to start at 10 a.m.
