Tritons Defeated By No. 17 Azusa Pacific, 82-76, at UCSD Thanksgiving Classic

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women’s basketball team led 17th-ranked Azusa Pacific through three quarters, but couldn’t hold on and fell by a score of 82-76 Saturday at the eighth-annual UCSD Thanksgiving Classic at RIMAC Arena.

UC San Diego drops to 4-2 on the season while the Cougars improve to 9-1.

With 2:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, junior Joleen Yang made a three-pointer that gave UCSD a one-point lead, 75-74, but APU answered scoring six-straight points in the final minute to seal the win.

Junior Marcella Hughes netted a career-high 20 points after finishing with four three-pointers. Senior Dalayna Sampton had a team-best 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Mikayla Williams picked up her second double-double of the weekend, scoring 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds.

The Tritons shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the field compared to the Cougars’ 44.6 percent (29-65). The hosts and visitors each grabbed 36 rebounds. UCSD shot 38.9 percent (7-18) from long range while APU shot 55 percent from behind the arc.

The Cougars’ Savanna Hanson tallied a game-high 30 points while Abbigall Goodsell and Gabrielle Kaiser finished with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

APU jumped out to a quick lead after Goodsell seven-straight points to make it a 9-5 game. However, Hughes made back-to-back jumpers followed by a three-pointer to give UCSD its first lead of the game, 15-14, after the first quarter.

The game tied twice in the second quarter before Hughes made two-straight three-pointers to give the Tritons a five-point lead with 1:26 left in the half. The Cougars tried to close the gap in the remaining minute, making it, 37-36 , heading into the locker room.

The lead changed eight times in the third quarter as UCSD held on to a one-point advantage, 60-59, heading into the final frame. The Tritons went on a seven-point run during the stretch fueled by a three-pointer from junior Kayla Sato.

Sato and Hughes had six and five points, respectively in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as APU escaped with the narrow victory.

For her efforts, Sampton was named to UCSD Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing the weekend with 37 points and 18 rebounds.

The Tritons will enter conference play with a game against Cal State San Bernardino Thursday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. UCSD won the CCAA regular season title with a 17-3 conference record.

In the first matchup of the day, Dominican defeated Cal State San Marcos by a score of 82-76. Natalie Diaz put up 31 points from the Penguins while Savannah Camp had 27 points for the Cougars.
