Release: Thursday 01/04/2018

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Hall of Champions has announced two University of California San Diego student-athletes have been named Stars of the Month for December 2017.

Women’s basketball senior forward Dalayna Sampton and men’s basketball junior forward Christian Oshita each earned the honor and will be recognized at the 72nd Annual Salute to the Champions event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on Feb. 1, 2018. The two latest selections bring the total of Triton Stars of the Month to 13 for the 2017 calendar year.

Sampton averaged a team-high 15.8 points and 11.8 rebounds while recording four double-doubles and shooting 53.5 percent from the field during the month of December, leading the Tritons to a 6-0 mark.

The 2016-17 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Newcomer of the Year and All-CCAA first-team selection, Sampton scored a career-high 27 points in a 60-56 overtime victory against Cal State L.A. on Dec. 17 and tallied a career-best five steals in UC San Diego’s 79-52 win over Stanislaus State on Dec. 31.

Overall this season, Sampton ranks 14th in the nation in total rebounds (140) and is 15th in rebounds per game (10.8). In addition, the Vallejo native has recorded six double-doubles, which is tied for 20th in the country.

Oshita averaged a team-best 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting .476 percent to lift the Tritons to a 4-2 record in the month of December. The junior notched double-figure scoring outputs in all six games, and also recorded a total of 15 assists and seven steals.

An All-CCAA second-team selection in 2016-17, Oshita recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season in a road matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 19. He leads the Tritons this season in both scoring (16.5) and rebounding (6.5).

Each month, the San Diego Hall of Champions honors as many as four professional, six amateur and six prep athletes for their outstanding athletic accomplishments. Stars of the Month are recognized in the San Diego Union-Tribune, via the Hall of Champions’ app, social media channels and website. In addition, top-performing Stars of the Month will also earn Star of the Year accolades. Those considered are either from San Diego or have achieved stardom for local teams.
