LA JOLLA, Calif. - Continuing a long-running tradition, the University of California San Diego Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its annual blood drive on Wednesday, January 10th.

Now in its 18th year, the event, which is spearheaded by the Triton Athletes' Council in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will run from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the RIMAC Green Room on campus. All are invited to donate and walk-ins will be welcomed all day long.

For the past 17 years, UC San Diego student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, and many more from across campus, as well as other San Diego residents, have come together to take part in the blood drive.

"We are thrilled to be putting on the 18th annual UC San Diego Athletics Department Blood Drive," said Andrew Dirks, a UCSD Track and Field student-athlete and member of the Triton Athletes' Council Executive Board. "It is always inspiring to see the Tritons and the community unite and give what they can for such an important cause."

One of the most powerful gifts one can give, a single blood donation can help up to three individuals.

"The UC San Diego Athletics Department Blood Drive is an important drive that collects much-needed blood during a critical time," said Dharma Nichols of the American Red Cross. "The need for blood is constant and December and January are the most difficult times of the year to keep the hospital shelves stocked. When a disaster like the Las Vegas shooting happens, it is the blood already on the shelves that we send. The hospitals are counting on us."

Over its 17 years in existence, the UC San Diego Athetics Department Blood Drive has collected close to 2,000 units of blood.

"Save a life today and donate blood," said Nichols.

Once again, walk-in donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Jan. 10.
