LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior opposite hitter Tanner Syftestad of the University of California San Diego men's program has added Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Player of the Week distinction to his first-week haul.

Syftestad on Monday had been named the first-ever Big West Conference Player of the Week following the new league's initial week of competition. He is now the first UC San Diego men's volleyball player to earn the AVCA's national recognition since Vaun Lennon on April 3, 2012. The Sacramento native is the fourth Triton to garner the honor, with Jason Spangler and Donald Chen prior selections on March 31, 2008, and March 20, 2000, respectively.

Also on Tuesday morning, Syftestad picked up VolleyMob Player of the Week honorable mention. VolleyMob.com is a second-year volleyball website.

Syftestad, a third-year team captain, produced 20-plus kills in a pair of season-opening wins at UCLA's Wooden Classic Tournament. Friday in a five-setter over McKendree (IL), he had 27 kills on .365 hitting with five digs, five blocks, two aces and two assists. The next night against King (TN), he compiled 22 more kills while attacking at a .356 rate, with seven digs, four blocks, two aces and an assist.

Syftestad hit .361 on 97 attacks for the weekend, totaling 49 kills, or a league-best 5.44 per set. UCSD is 2-0 for the first time since 1996.

The Tritons will look to go 3-0 when they take the court for their 2018 home opener this Thursday, Jan. 11, against UC Merced.
