Tritons Score Early and Often in 17-7 WWPA Win Against Cal State East Bay

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In its first Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) match of the season, the 15th-ranked University of California San Diego scored 16 goals over the first three quarters to roll to a 17-7 victory against Cal State East Bay Friday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

UC San Diego improved to 4-5 overall with the win, while CSUEB fell to 2-2.

The Tritons exploded for six goals in the opening quarter and added five more in each of the second and third quarters.

Six different UCSD players had multiple goals, including freshman Ciara Franke (San Diego/La Jolla HS), who notched a hat trick. Halley Atkinson (Escondido/Mission Hills HS), Kayla Fedler, Carly Innis, Taylor Onstott (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS), and Shelby Stender all netted two goals apiece. Jessee Ransone, Chanel Schilling, and Maddy Wieseler rounded out the Triton scoring.

Three different UCSD goalies saw playing time with Bennett Bugelli (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) and Tori Rainone each making three saves and Reilly Gallagher collecting two.

UC San Diego hosts its annual Triton Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 11. The Tritons begin action against No. 12 Indiana on Saturday at 9:20 a.m. For complete information, visit the tournament page.
