UC San Diego, along with Cal Poly Pomona, Humboldt State and Cal State LA have each clinched spots in the upcoming eight-team CCAA Tournament. San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay have been mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the tournament, leaving the remaining four berths up for grabs between seven teams. The top four teams in the regular-season standings will host first-round games on Feb. 27, with only UC San Diego securing its position so far as the tourney's No. 1 seed. The semifinals and championship game will be hosted by Cal Poly Pomona March 2-3.

The NCAA released its first West Region rankings of the season Wednesday and UC San Diego sits in the No. 4 spot. Eight teams from the West will earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, with the selections being announced on Sunday, March 4 at 7 p.m. PT.

On Nov. 27, UC San Diego was officially invited to become a member of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference. The Tritons will begin a four-year reclassification period starting in the fall of 2020. They will play a full Big West schedule that season and will be eligible for NCAA Championships in men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and fencing. For the 2024-25 academic year, all sports will be eligible to compete in Big West and NCAA Division I championships. Read the full press release here.

UC San Diego clinched the CCAA regular-season championship last weekend and has secured the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament beginning on Feb. 27. The Tritons will play host to the No. 8 seed in the first-round matchup. UC San Diego enters Thursday night's contest winners of 17 of its last 18 games, and is currently receiving votes in the WBCA national poll for the fourth-consecutive week. In addition, the Tritons are ranked No. 2 in this week’s D2SIDA West Region Media Poll. UC San Diego enters the week ranked 43rd in the nation in scoring margin, as the Tritons are outscoring opponents this season by 12.3 points per game.

The Tritons won two CCAA contests last week, defeating Cal Poly Pomona at home, 68-66, on Feb. 9, before topping Cal State San Bernardino on the road, 60-51, on Feb. 10.

Senior forward Dalayna Sampton finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Joleen Yang scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting to lift the Tritons to a victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Spirit Night. Sophomore forward Mikayla Williams added 16 points and 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season, while junior Kayla Sato recorded 13 points, five assists and three steals.

Dalayna Sampton (16 points, 13 rebounds) Mikayla Williams (15 points, 12 rebounds) each had big games to lift the Tritons to a road victory over Cal State San Bernardino en route to clinching their third-straight CCAA regular-season championship. Kayla Sato added 15 points and eight rebounds in UC San Diego’s ninth-consecutive road win.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Williams was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Feb. 13. Williams posted her ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season in CCAA victories last week against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Williams recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds in a thrilling victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 9, and followed it up with a dynamic 15-point, 12-rebound performance in a win over CSU San Bernardino on Feb. 10. The Meath Park, SK, Canada native has scored double-digit points in 12-consecutive games. 

Senior guard Taylor Tanita is sixth in the nation in total assists (149) and ranks eighth in assists per game (6.2) ... As a team, UC San Diego is 22nd in the country in total assists (404), 22nd in assists per game (16.8) and 24th in assist to turnover ratio (1.19).

The Tritons rank third in the nation in rebounding margin, dominating opponents on the glass this season 1011-749 (10.9 per game) ... UC San Diego ranks 25th nationally in defensive rebounds per contest (30) ... Senior forward Dalayna Sampton enters the weekend ranked 21st in the nation in total rebounds (247) and 23rd in rebounds per game (10.3).

UC San Diego junior guard Joleen Yang enters the week ranked second the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (50.9 percent) ... Yang leads the Tritons in 3-pointers made (58) and attempted (114) this season ... As a team, UC San Diego is 12th in the country in 3-point field-goal percentage (37.4) and 32nd in overall field-goal percentage (44.3).

UC San Diego highlighted its 2016-17 season by capturing a second successive CCAA regular-season crown. The Tritons finished runner-up in the CCAA Tournament after falling to Cal State East Bay, 62-53. UCSD earned a berth in the NCAA West Regional as the fourth seed, where it suffered a 69-65 loss to Simon Fraser in the quarterfinal. Head coach Heidi VanDerveer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year while junior transfer Dalayna Sampton earned CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors. UC San Diego had three players named All-CCAA in Cassie MacLeod, Beth Mounier and Sampton. Joleen Yang earned honorable mention.

Heidi VanDerveer is in her sixth campaign as the head coach of the UC San Diego women's basketball team with a 116-46 overall record. VanDerveer was named 2016-17 CCAA Coach of the Year for the second-straight season, as she and her staff led the Tritons to a 23-7 overall record (17-3 CCAA) and a second-consecutive CCAA regular-season title. The Tritons qualified the NCAA Division II postseason for the 10th time since 2000-01, competing in the quarterfinals against Simon Fraser. Prior to coming to La Jolla, VanDerveer spent four seasons at Division III Occidental, where she compiled an impressive 83-26 record and led the Tigers to four straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles. VanDerveer has also spent time as the head coach at Eastern Washington and San Francisco after beginning her coaching career under Pat Summitt at Tennessee, and spent 12 years working in the WNBA.
