LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of California San Diego softball pitcher Robyn Wampler has been named a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for April.
Wampler went 7-2 and earned three saves while posting a stellar 1.31 ERA during the month. The freshman left-hander struck out 70 batters over 64.1 innings of work. She fanned a career-high 12 at Cal State Dominguez Hills and followed that with a 10-strikeout performance the next day against the Toros. She also struck out 10 at Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the month.
Wampler was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week for three straight weeks in April.
The CCAA Freshman of the Year and an All-CCAA First Team selection, Wampler is currently 24-8 with a 1.67 ERA over 200.2 innings of work in the circle. Nationally, she ranks ninth in wins, 10th in saves (5), 27th in strikeouts (186), 33rd in shutouts (6), and 35th in ERA. She finished the CCAA season as the conference leader in shutouts (5), saves (5), and strikeouts (134). In addition, she was second in wins (17), ERA (1.41), and innings pitched (144.0) and third in complete games (16).
UC San Diego, 35-17 overall and ranked 20th nationally, is the West Region's fifth seed at this week's NCAA Division II Regional at Chico State. The Tritons open play against fourth-seeded and 15th-ranked California Baptist (33-10) Thursday at noon. The winner of the four team, double elimination tournament advances to the Super Regional round, May 17-18.
Wampler is the sixth Triton to win Star of the Month honors from the San Diego Hall of Champions in the 2018 calendar year.
