PHILADELPHIA - Both of the University of California San Diego's boats won their heats Friday at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River outside of Philadelphia.
In the Division II Varsity 8 Heat 1 race, UC San Diego recorded a winning time of 6:45.656, just edging out Mercyhurst, which crossed the finish line in 6:46.352. West Region rival Humboldt State was third in 6:52.306 and Nova Southeastern placed fourth in 7:04.840. The Tritons' time was the best of the two V8 heats.
The Tritons' Varsity 8 will row in the final for the Henry Backe Trophy on Saturday at 1:20 p.m. PT. They will be up against Jefferson, Mercyhurst, Barry, Seattle Pacific, and Humboldt State.
UC San Diego's Varsity 4 also topped its heat with a time of 7:31.030, well in front of second-place Merrimack, which finished in 7:36.502. Franklin & Marshall was third in 7:40.475 and North Park took fourth in 7:45.066. The Tritons' time was the second-fastest of the three V4 heats as Barry registered a 7:30.336 in the first race.
The Varsity 4 Final will go off Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PT. Along with the Tritons, Merrimack, Jefferson, Barry, Rollins, and Humboldt State will be in the field.
In the most recent national rankings, Barry is fourth, UC San Diego is fifth, Humboldt State is sixth, Seattle Pacific is seventh, and Jefferson is eighth. Mercyhurst and Nova Southeastern are receiving votes.
