LA JOLLA, Calif. - Nine home matches in a renovated RIMAC Arena highlight the 2018 season schedule for the University of California San Diego women's volleyball program.
UC San Diego's campaign starts with nine straight contests away from La Jolla, including two consecutive tournaments.
The Tritons get things going Aug. 23-25 at the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge, hosted by Hawai'i Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai'i. They will face UHH (first-ever meeting), Hawai'i Pacific, and Chaminade out of the PacWest Conference as well as Saint Martin's from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). It will be the team's first trip to Hawai'i since the 2012 NCAA Division II West Regional on Oahu.
UC San Diego will then conclude its regular season non-conference slate Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Fresno Pacific's West Region Showcase with matches against FPU (PacWest), Chaminade, Simon Fraser (GNAC), and Seattle Pacific (GNAC).
The team's first of 17 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tilts comes on Sept. 8 at cross-county foe Cal State San Marcos. Following that, UC San Diego will serve as host for the first time in back-to-back fashion on Sept. 14 and Sept. 15 against league rivals San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay, respectively. The Pioneers of Cal State East Bay knocked the Tritons out of the 2017 conference tournament.
On Sept. 22, UC San Diego travels to the Inland Empire to take on Cal State San Bernardino, the reigning CCAA and NCAA West Region champion. CSUSB won 13 of its final 14 matches last season, falling to eventual national runner-up Florida Southern in an NCAA Elite Eight match-up. The Tritons will entertain the Coyotes at RIMAC Arena on Oct. 5.
Other home matches include Sept. 25 (Cal State LA), Oct. 2 (Cal State Dominguez Hills), Oct. 6 (Cal Poly Pomona), Oct. 19 (Humboldt State), Oct. 20 (Sonoma State), and Oct. 27 (Cal State San Marcos).
The Oct. 5 match against Cal State San Bernardino will be the annual Dig for a Cure event in support of breast cancer awareness, while the Oct. 6 match will be the sixth annual Reis Cup.
The regular season closes on the road with conference contests at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 2 and Cal State LA on Nov. 3.
The CCAA Championship will run Nov. 8-10 at Stanislaus State in Turlock, followed by the NCAA West Regional Nov. 15-17. The NCAA Championship, hosted by Slippery Rock University, is slated for Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Ninth-year head coach Ricci Luyties (150-79, .655) returns three starters and a primary libero from a 2017 squad that recorded a 16-10 overall record and went 10-7 in CCAA play, good for a third-place finish in the South Division and a berth in the conference tournament. All-CCAA middle blockers Micah Hammond (senior) and Jessica Rieble (junior), outside hitter Molly Dalziel (senior), and libero Alyson Penrose (junior) return to the floor to lead the Tritons, who ranked 39th in attacks per set and 41st in blocks per set nationally in 2017.
All home matches begin at 7 p.m. with tickets available for purchase at the RIMAC Arena box office. As always, UC San Diego students are admitted free of charge to all regular season contests.
