Ashlynn Kolarik Nets First Collegiate Goal, but No. 2 Tritons Settle for 1-1 Draw at Hawai'i Pacific
Release: Tuesday 09/04/2018

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i - The second-ranked University of California San Diego women's soccer team took a 1-0 first-half lead and produced 27 shots, but had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime draw with host Hawai'i Pacific at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park on Tuesday afternoon.

With the tie, UC San Diego moves to 2-0-1 on the season. Hawai'i Pacific is 0-1-1.

The Tritons struck at 40:33 as true freshman reserve winger Ashlynn Kolarik tallied her first career goal. Redshirt junior holding central midfielder and All-American team co-captain Natalie Saddic (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) sent a right-footed free kick from the right diagonal, into the mixer of the penalty area. Kolarik picked up the loose ball and shot it from about 15 yards out on the left side, into the right corner. Saddic was not credited with an assist.

UC San Diego had back-to-back opportunities earlier in the frame, but senior striker Megumi Barber (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) went high of the target with her effort in the 27th minute, and sophomore midfielder Caitlin McCarthy (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) had her attempt saved by HPU goalie Marissa Froio in the 29th.

The host Sharks almost broke the scoreless deadlock in the 33rd, but Tehani Furuta's right-footed free kick from the left diagonal, smacked against the crossbar.

UC San Diego thought it had doubled the advantage early in the second half, but a headed Saddic goal was disallowed due to an offside call.

Barber found the bar herself in the 70th minute, before HPU nabbed the equalizer in the 82nd, Furuta heading the ball from the left side of the box, into the right netting, for her second of 2018. Like the Tritons' goal, the play started from a deep free kick.

The best chance at a winner in the two 10-minute overtime periods, arguably came from UC San Diego winger and co-captain Summer Bales. Fellow fourth-year senior Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) galloped into the penalty box on the right side, and found Bales, but her narrow-angle shot was denied by Froio in the 108th.

Redshirt junior Angelica Ramos finished with three saves between the posts for UC San Diego. In her college debut, Froio, a product of Simi Valley, made 11 stops.

The Tritons stay unbeaten over their last 20 games (16-0-4) overall going back to last season, and are 5-0-3 over their last eight road contests.

UC San Diego remains in Honolulu, Hawai'i, and will play at future Division I and Big West Conference foe Hawai'i in primetime this Friday night, Sept. 7, at 10 p.m. PT (7 p.m. HT). The game is at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Triton Notes: UC San Diego is 2-0-1 all-time against HPU, with prior road wins in 2007 (5-0) and 1997 (2-0) ... The Tritons are now 5-0-1 all-time on O'ahu, outscoring opponents, 13-2 ... UC San Diego has allowed 10 goals during this 20-game unbeaten streak, with one own goal and one penalty kick ... The Tritons' 27 shots are their most since they had the same number in a 2-0 home win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 16, 2016 ... Megumi Barber's game- and career-high eight shots were the most by a Triton since strike partner Mary Reilly was credited with eight in a 2-1 home victory against Central Washington on Sept. 2, 2017.
