Softball's 2019 Slate Features Season Opener in Vegas, Tournament of Champions, and More
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego softball team has released its schedule for the 2019 season. The Tritons will host six different teams at home throughout the season, including five of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponents.
For the second-straight year, the Tritons will head to Las Vegas to open the season at the Desert Stinger Softball Tournament. From Feb. 1-3, they will look to repeat their success from last year, when they picked up five wins while going undefeated at the tournament. Head Coach Patti Gerckens is looking forward to beginning the 2019 season at the tournament.
“We’re excited to start the season in Las Vegas again,” Gerckens said. “It was a great trip for us last year. We had to opportunity to bond with each other on the road, and it helped us prepare for a strong conference schedule.”
UC San Diego then heads home after the tournament, hosting three consecutive series at Triton Softball Field. The homestand starts when the Tritons host conference foe Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 8 and 9. UC San Diego will then host Azusa Pacific for midweek action on Feb. 13. Two days later, the Tritons return to CCAA play when they host Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 15 and 16.
The Tritons hit the road for a four-game series with Stanislaus State for their final action in February, facing the Warriors in Turlock on Feb. 22 and 23.
At the start of March, the Tritons are home once more as they continue CCAA action. They will host Humboldt State on March 1 and 2. The next weekend, UC San Diego will go to Sonoma State to compete against the Seawolves in a four-game series on March 8 and 9.
On March 14 and 15, the Tritons will welcome San Francisco State to La Jolla. The second day of the series will be Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Triton Softball Field.
UC San Diego sees its last action before the Tournament of Champions when it travels to Chico on March 24 and 25. The Tritons will take on Chico State, who they faced in last year’s CCAA Championship, for contests in the afternoon each day.
The Tournament of Champions will take place from March 29-31, as the Tritons spend the weekend battling opponents in Turlock.
UC San Diego remains on the road as it completes its final two away series of the season. First, the Tritons open the month of April in Hayward as they take part in conference action with Cal State East Bay on April 5 and 6. The Tritons then continue CCAA road play as they face local rival Cal State San Marcos at the Cougars’ field. The series will take place on April 19 and 20.
UC San Diego hosts its final regular-season action at home on April 26 and 27, closing out the regular season by playing host to San Bernardino.
Postseason play will begin after that with the CCAA Championship, which will take place in Seaside. Then, the Tritons will look to compete in the NCAA Tournament for their second-consecutive year.
