LA JOLLA, Calif. - UCSD celebrated the Grand Opening of the new West Pool at Canyonview Aquatic Complex on Tuesday, February 7th at 11a.m.  Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, Vice Chancellor Joseph Watson, Director of Aquatics Denny Harper, and UCSD alum Julie Swail all spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new pool, completed after a three year construction process.

Swail, who graduated in 1995, still holds UCSD’s top two single season goal records, as well as the records for single season penalties drawn, career goals, career shooting percentage, and career penalties drawn.  The All-American and National Champion reflected on how her time as a Triton gave her the experience needed as she went on to Captain and win a silver medal with the 2000 Olympic Women’s Water Polo team.  She called the new Canyonview a “pool of opportunity.”

Designed by the Aquatic Design Group with architects Hanna, Gabriel, Wells, principal architect Matthew Wells, General Contractor Taylor Frager, and Pool Construction completed by Mission Pools, the West Pool will offer opportunity to both athletes and recreational swimmers.  Aquatic Director Harper says the expansion “should be a good advantage.”

“We were packed at Canyonview.  Everyone is a winner: recreation and athletics,” said Harper, entering his 26th season as the men’s water polo coach. “From an athletic perspective, this is a different feel.  That’s going to help competitively, and I’d like to think that means we’re all going to get a little better.”

Measuring 50 meters by 25 yards and uniform seven feet deep, the West Pool also adds new weight room, locker rooms, and bleacher seating for 1,000.  Calling the pool “high quality” and praising the spectator experience and recruiting advantage, Senior Associate Athletic Director Ken Grosse feels the new resources will allow more space and flexibility for all Tritons.

“The original Canyonview was one of the most impacted facilities we have on campus. This is going to allow a lot more time for the recreational swimmer, as well as our programs.  It’s going to allow the teams and programs like Masters swimming to operate at hours that are more convenient,” Grosse said.

Coach Harper is not ready to completely forget about the original pool, where his teams have played during 13 WWPA Championship seasons, and entered the Guinness Book of Records by playing 26 continuous hours of water polo on April 7-8, 1989.

“I’m always going to love the original pool, but I like the way they’re side by side, connected by the breezeway,” said Harper, also excited about the new opportunities the West Pool presents.  “We can obviously host major events now, so we’re excited about that.  We’re going to be utilizing both pools for Masters, Nationals, Over 55, Master water polo games.  I think it turned out really well.”

The first game in the new pool will be Friday at 6:00 p.m. as the UCSD women’s water polo team takes on Hartwick.  Women’s water polo then returns to action at the 2006 Triton Invitational on February 11-12.  The 17th-ranked Tritons will host 14 of the top teams in the nation.  Placed in a competitive Group A with 7th-ranked Long Beach State, UCSD will play their first tournament game Saturday at 10:10a.m. against Pomona Pitzer in the West Pool.
