VOLLEYBALL PUTS NO. 4 RANKING ON LINE IN SAN BERNARDINO TOURNAMENT
Ranked fourth nationally in the CSTV/AVCA poll, the Women’s Volleyball team opens its 2007 campaign this weekend at the Cal State San Bernardino Tournament...Coming off a season where they posted a 26-3 record and went to the NCAA Elite Eight, the Tritons will square off against Regis (CO) on Thursday and Seattle Pacific Friday before closing out with Saturday matches vs. Southwest Minnesota State and Fort Lewis (CO).

Coach Tom Black, whose team was picked to finish second in the CCAA by a vote of the conference coaches, returns starters Rebecca Bailey, Amber Ries and Sylvia Schmidt and libero Natalie Facchini...Bailey is a two-time All-CCAA selection and Facchini is the all-time digs leader at UCSD...The Tritons’ home opener will not arrive until Sept. 8 when CCAA foe Cal State L.A. visits RIMAC Arena.

WOMEN’S SOCCER DEBUTS AGAINST NO. 6 NEBRASKA-OMAHA
The pre-season pick to win its seventh CCAA crown in eight years and slotted No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, the Women’s Soccer team will hit the field for the first time Sunday hosting Nebraska-Omaha which is one spot below the Tritons in the pre-season rankings...The Brian McManus-coached club went 20-2-2 last fall and captured the CCAA title before seeing its season end in the Elite Eight with a loss to eventual NCAA champ Metro State (CO).

Returning for McManus is senior forward Kathy Sepulveda, last year's leading scorer (12 goals/4 assists), as well as Ali Lai who accounted for seven goals and two assists...In front of keeper Jessica McGovern, the Tritons will have the experienced defensive trio of Alie Avina, Amanda Esquivel and Stacy Johnson.

POINT LOMA DUAL FIRST UP FOR CROSS COUNTRY SQUADS
For the first time in 17 years the Cross Country team will toe the starting line for a coach other than Ted Van Arsdale...The successful veteran mentor retired this summer and former assistant Nate Garcia will be at the helm when the Tritons battle crosstown rival Point Loma in a dual meet Saturday on the UCSD course. The women’s 2.5 mile race will run first followed by the men covering four miles...Both teams return Wednesday from a nine-day training sojourn to Mammoth.

Seniors Diane Dunn, Emily McGregor and Amanda Burkhardt will lead a talented women’s team that placed 16th in the nation a year ago and return virtually intact...On the men’s side, the Tritons lose just one senior off the ’06 roster and the returners will include last fall’s freshmen standouts Max Mullender and Jesse Morrill along with upperclassmen Greg Geldman and Jake LeVieux.

MEN’S SOCCER PICKED FOR THIRD IN SOUTH DIVISION
A young Men’s Soccer team that graduated eight seniors was picked for third in the CCAA’s South Division race by conference coaches...Coach Derek Armstrong’s unit slumped down the stretch in 2006 to finish 7-10-2...Among the veteran players is 2006 CCAA Freshman of the Year Tony Choi...The team’s 2007 opener will be Sept. 4 at home against NAIA Concordia.

MEN’S WATER POLO GEARS FOR SEPT. 1 OPENER
Twenty-eighth-year Head Coach Denny Harper puts his team starts its second week of pre-season workouts today, prepping for its Sept. 1 opener in the eight-team Triton Invitational Tournament...Harper’s 2006 outfit might have been the best in school history, logging a 26-6 record, winning its 14th Western Water Polo Assn. (WWPA) title and finishing third at the NCAA Championships...The Tritons are No. 8 in the Collegiate Water Polo Assn.’s national pre-season poll.
